AKRON BEACON JOURNAL

"Throwing Stones is a post-9/11 thriller by John Wasik and Phillip Parrish, retired police officers from [Cleveland and Greater Cleveland], respectively. The narrator is Thomas Freiderich, a police officer in Hamburg, Germany.

Thomas has two sisters, who have married Iraqi men, and each has had a son; after a spat at a family reunion, one nephew, Jusef, disappears. Thomas suspects that Jusef has come to America under an assumed name and joined a terrorist cell in Cleveland, and he and his other nephew, Gabriel, come to track him down.

Thomas first contacts the FBI, but they show little interest. Then he calls on old friends in the Cleveland police, and they agree to help him (on an unofficial basis, of course). In the meantime, Jusef waits for instructions and tries to sort out his own motives — is he involved because he believes in his cause, or is he seeking revenge for his father, killed in action? A relationship with an alluring but duplicitous woman further confuses him.

Some questions about mechanics remain, but much is redeemed with an exciting action sequence on the Cuyahoga River. The stage is set for a sequel, which is announced at the end of the book." Throwing Stones (206 pages, hardcover) costs $20 from http://www.AtlasBooks.com

FOREWARD MAGAZINE

"German police investigator Thomas Freiderich has family scattered all over the world. When he learns that his nephew Jusef may be involved in a planned terrorist attack against the United States, he feels compelled to locate the youth and get him out of danger. This novel follows him through his desperate chase after Jusef.

This is, however, no ordinary thriller. The authors use the story to show the origins of widespread enmity against the US, and to argue that Americans are quite unprepared to fight the 'war on terrorism.' ...readers will surely find the possibilities disturbing."
